For years I have been struggling with getting a complete technical description of computer systems I work on. I would end up using multiple applications to get everything I need.  In Windows, you can use System Information, but most of what it returns is complex, and looks like something only an engineer can love.

Lately I’ve been working with an application from Piriform called Speccy. This application can be downloaded for free (and for a donation) at http://www.piriform.com/speccy/download.

Cisco has been the leader in VoIP technology for several years now. If you are saving money on your phone bills by using the Cisco UC500 series of telephone systems you know what I’m writing about.

Making changes to the configuration of these systems once they are installed has been a big problem for users because changes can be complicated. A single mistake can take down the phone system. While you are waiting for the engineer to arrive to fix it, you might be losing business.

Encrypting Thumbdrives

All companies should be concerned about security. I’m not encouraging small businesses to spend tens of thousands of dollars hiring security guards or raising explosive sniffing bloodhounds, but there are simple things that can be done to make your life easier. For instance, let’s say you lose your thumb drive. Was there anything on it that is sensitive? Are you really sure there isn’t?

Can an iPad Work in an IT Support World?

Last week I obtained an iPad.  I didn’t really search it out, it was an opportunity I couldn’t resist.  While I have been wanting a tablet device, I haven’t really been interested in anything Apple and was really waiting for one of the Android or Windows 7 machines coming this fall which should be more open to, well, everything.  I frankly don’t want to be bothered by the restrictions that Apple places on any of their devices.  My kids love them, but I’m not so sure.
